Can My Therapist Understand My Faith and Culture?

When you’re looking for a therapist in Nigeria, one big question pops up:

“Will they get me?"

Not just your anxiety or depression. But the you part.

The part that prays tahajjud. The part that can’t tell your mum "no" because of culture. The part that believes deliverance and therapy can both be true.

If you’ve ever sat in therapy and thought “I can’t say this or they won’t understand", this is for you.

Why Faith and Culture Matter in Therapy

Mental health doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens in your home, your church, your mosque, your family group chat.

Examples:

  1. Faith:"Is it a lack of faith or is it depression?" "Can I pray about this AND take medication?"

  2. Culture: "I can’t move out at 25. That’s not how we do it." "My parents chose my course. Now I’m miserable."

  3. Stigma: "If people in church find out I’m seeing a therapist, they’ll say I’m not praying enough."

If your therapist ignores all of that, therapy will feel shallow. Like they’re solving half the problem.

The Truth: Not All Therapists Are Trained In This

Some therapists are great clinically, but they don’t understand:

- Why you can’t just "set boundaries" with elders

- Why "God told me" is a real part of your decision making

- Why you’d rather see a male/female therapist for religious reasons

- Why you mix prayer, fasting, AND therapy

That’s why at MindMed we ask about it from day 1.

How MindMed Approaches Faith & Culture

1. We ask you on the intake form

When you sign up, we have a "Faith-Integrated Care" option.

We ask if you want faith included in sessions.

You can select: Yes, No, or No Preference.

2. You get to decide how much faith is in the room

Option A: "No faith talk please. Just therapy."

Option B: "I’m Christian and I want us to use scriptures and prayer if helpful"

Option C: "I’m Muslim and I want us to reference Quranic principles + coping"

Option D: "I’m not religious but my family is, and it’s affecting me"

No pressure, or assumptions.

3. Our psychologists are trained to be culturally competent

That means we understand:

- Family hierarchy and "respect" in Nigerian homes

- The role of pastors, imams, and community leaders

- How spiritual warfare, curses, or "village people" language shows up in distress

- Why shame and "what will people say" is real here

We won’t tell you to abandon your faith. We’ll help you use what already helps you, in a healthy way.

What Faith-Integrated Therapy Can Look Like

Example 1: Anxiety

Standard CBT: "Let’s challenge catastrophic thoughts"

Faith-Integrated: "Let’s challenge the thoughts AND look at Philippians 4:6-7 or Quran 94:5-6 for grounding. What does peace look like for you?"

Example 2: Grief

Standard: Process the loss, coping skills

Faith-Integrated: "How has your faith helped you through loss before? Would you like to include prayer or dhikr in our coping plan?"

Example 3: Guilt/Shame

Standard: "Where did you learn this belief about yourself?"

Faith-Integrated: "Does this align with what God says about you? Let’s separate conviction from shame."

3 Fears People Have And The Truth

Fear 1: "They’ll tell me my faith is the problem"

Truth: We don’t. Faith is often a source of strength. We only address it if it’s being used in a harmful way, like "I must suffer because God wants me to."

Fear 2: "They’ll try to convert me"

Truth: Never. Our job is to support your beliefs, not push ours.

Fear 3: "They won’t understand Nigerian family pressure"

Truth: We live here too. We know "just move out" isn’t always an option. We’ll work with your reality.

What If I Don’t Want Faith in Therapy?

That’s 100% okay too.

Lots of clients choose MindMed and say "I just want practical tools". We respect that.

Faith-integration is an option, not a requirement.

Therapy should fit you, not the other way around.

How To Know If A Therapist "Gets" You

Ask these in your first session:

  1. "Are you comfortable talking about faith/spirituality if I bring it up?"

  2. "How do you work with Nigerian cultural values like family and community?"

  3. "Can we include prayer/scripture/Quran in sessions if I want?"

If they get defensive or dismissive, that’s not your person.
